What Makes Shingles so Painful

The pain associated with shingles results from damage to the nerves caused by the varicella-zoster virus. Pain can occur before the formation of any rash. This symptom often feels like a sharp or burning sensation, beginning at the site and radiating outward.

Other common symptoms of shingles include itchy blisters and a red, raised rash that can spread across large parts of the body and remain for several weeks. Pain, however, tends to be the most dramatic consequence of this virus. With shingles, pain can last up to thirty days after the rash has gone away and, in some cases, may even become chronic. To reduce discomfort associated with shingles, it’s essential that individuals contact their healthcare professional about what medications and treatments are available for them.
